Abstract

In building an international school, NTUT has prioritized the development of student’s foreign language proficiency as well as their international mobility. To succeed in this globalization goal, NTUT has increased the number of EMI classes via the exchange and introduction of foreign faculty members, aiming to increase student’s listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills in English. With an extensive international partnership network, NTUT is looking forward to form more faculty member and student exchange programs and international joint research projects. Engaging in the BEST program, we believe, will help in preparing our faculty members and students achieve this goal.
The Office of Academic Affairs takes charge of developing the EMI teaching and learning support system, adjusting related policies and regulations, and facilitating communication among teachers and students in key cultivation colleges.
The Department of English and the Media Center are the English-learning support units that develop training programs for English proficiency and EMI teacher development.
The key cultivation colleges are responsible for designing, planning and implementing the EMI courses. Moreover, they take charge of quality assurance, feedback collection from teachers and students, and improvement of the EMI courses.
In order to reach a consensus on the implementation of bilingual education in key cultivation colleges, apart from holding regular EMI teaching consensus meetings at the beginning and the end of the semester, classroom observations and interviews, and Mid-term Student Feedback on EMI Learning are also involved. For guiding future adjustments, monthly TA feedback is obtained to help understand teachers’ and students’ needs on teaching and learning resources and related policies.

In the Academic Year 2021/2022, the goal of offering 5% EMI courses has been achieved, and the actual growth was greater than anticipated. In order to gradually raise the proportion of EMI courses each year, NTUT will set goals on the number of EMI courses by key cultivation colleges, non-key cultivation colleges and common subjects in the academic year 2022/2023. The College of Engineering aims at overall growth in the proportion of EMI fundamental courses among all the departments. In the future, the college will comply with NTUT’s regulations and keep raising the ratio of EMI courses (both fundamental and EMI courses).
