Abstract

Institutional strategy and management:

  1. The Bilingual Education Office (BEO) incepted the “Subsidy for Promoting Key Cultivation Colleges for the BEST Program” and “Subsidy for NTPU Students’ English Proficiency Test.” The College of Business (CoB) refined regulations related to the BEST Program.
  2. An additional external committee member was invited to join the CoB Bilingual Education Review and Promotion Committee. The involvement of external stakeholders has enhanced the implementation of the formulated strategies.
  3. In the 2022/23 academic year, the CoB recruited 4 professional faculty members with EMI teaching capacity. The CoB plans to recruit 8 more faculty members with the same capacity in the 2023/24 academic year.

Teachers and teaching:

  1. EMI Teacher training program and reward system: To increase the number of qualified teachers for EMI teaching, we facilitated 24 teachers to participate and acquire certificates in Cambridge English online training courses in the 2022/23 Academic year. To promote experience sharing among EMI teachers, we organized 25 EMI teacher community meetings, forums, and workshops with more than 400 participants. The CoB also set up an EMI Mentor class-observation mechanism and EMI teaching subsidies and awards.
  2. Mentor-Mentee system: Senior or experienced EMI faculty members in the CoB guide new EMI faculty members to enhance their teaching effectiveness and reduce the burden of lesson preparation. 8 EMI faculty members implemented the system in the 2022/23 academic year.
  3. EMI TA Training program: The Language Center and the EMI Mentor take charge of the EMI TA training. In the 2022/23 academic year, 44 students joined the EMI TA skill training and gained certificates. The CoB also held several EMI TA meetings for TAs to share their experience.
  4. International collaborations: In the 2022/23 academic year, the CoB invited 8 foreign scholars (from the UK, USA, Canada, and Hong Kong) in joint lectures or short visits so that the CoB faculty members could observe and learn from these EMI courses. The CoB continued collaborating with Waseda University in faculty and scholar exchange, while the BEO and the Language Center submitted proposals for two AIT English Language programs.

Students and learning:

  1. Awards and subsidies: To increase the incentives for students to take EMI courses and English proficiency tests, the CoB introduced new regulations providing subsidies and awards for students taking EMI courses, EMI Module courses, and English proficiency tests.
  2. English for Specific Academic Purposes courses: The Language Center collaborates with the CoB on developing the ESAP EMI bridging courses to prepare students for EMI learning in their fields. Up to the 2022/23 academic year, the Language Center has developed two new ESAP courses and set up an “EAP/ESAP Micro-credit Program for Undergraduate Students,” a credit program composed of 7 courses in which students can gain certificates upon completing 8 credits.
  3. The CoB EMI-featured module courses: In addition to the 3 module categories (Organization, Finance, and Marketing) implemented in the 2021/22 academic year, a new module, Information Management, was developed in the 2022/23 academic year. These module courses can provide more robust and suppler interdisciplinary studies.
  4. English-related competitions and activities:

(1) English Movie Appreciation Event: Between March and May, 2 film seminars and 7 English movie appreciation sessions were held to encourage students to improve their listening skills through movie watching while learning about cultural elements depicted in the films. A total of 156 students participated.

(2) English Movie Dubbing Contest: 40 groups with a total of 154 students participated in English pronunciation and intonation practice through dubbing animated movies.

(3) 2023 English Digital Storytelling Contest: The Language Center held an
preliminary selection and selected one student to participate in the contest organized by National Taiwan University. NTPU representative received the Honorable Mention Award in the group for English majors.

(4) Read & Share Contest: The Language Center promotes reading and writing
through a Read & Share contest in which students produce book reports that external reviewers evaluate. The number of participants reached 55 in the 2022/23 academic year.

(5) Study Groups: The Language Center facilitated 5 20-hour extra-curricular  English Study Groups to promote English learning. A total of 111 students participated.

(6) Roundtable Conversation sessions: 5 English sessions were offered for signing up, providing students with English conversation practice on various topics. A total of 268 participants attended.

(7) English Clinic service: Teachers of the Language Center provide 10 weekly sessions, assisting students in revising English documents for job and school applications and consulting on various English learning problems. A total of 87 students participated.

(8) Art Workshops: The Language Center organized art project-based workshops by a native English speaker, featuring photography art and African mask making. These workshops allow students to communicate in English. A total of 26 participants took part.

5. MyET English Oral Competition: Online English Learning Modules for Business
English and General English were purchased to strengthen students’ listening and speaking skills. A total of 96 students attended the competition.

Information disclosure:

  1. Conducting EMI orientation: The CoB organized orientations to introduce the BEST project and related subsidies in the CoB to new faculty members and freshmen. There are 107 attendees in the 2022/23 academic year.
  2. Digital promotion: NTPU BEO Voice: The BEO and Language Center produced the podcast “NTPU BEO VOICE” for teachers and students to understand the relevant strategy and training, reward, and subsidy information about EMI implementation. Thirty-five episodes aired on Apple and Google Podcasts, with over 4,477 downloads.
  3. EMI Today publication: Issue 2 was released.
  4. EMI Spotlight: The BEO invites experienced EMI teachers and TAs to share their ideas and insights on EMI Teacher Spotlight and EMI TA Spotlight,
which allows all the EMI teachers and TAs to learn more from their peers.

Quality assurance:

  1. Through the Assurance of Learning mechanism required by the AACSB, CoB continuously evaluates, modifies, and improves the EMI educational effectiveness to enhance students’ learning experience.
  2. School-wide EMI course survey: We conducted the Google questionnaire to assess the students’ learning and understand their difficulties in taking the EMI courses. Among the 462 valid results, 69% find the language support provided by the school very helpful.

Resource sharing and collaboration:

  1. EMI Forum: The Language Center and the College of Business jointly held the EMI forum, “Optimizing Teaching and Learning for Bilingual Education,” to exchange ideas and experiences with international scholars and universities. The 2023 NTPU EMI forum invited EMI teachers in Taiwan and international scholars affiliated with universities in Japan (Shitennoji University Junior College) and Singapore (National University of Singapore). A total of 124 people participated, scoring a 4.2 satisfaction rate on a 5-point scale.
  2. Inter-university EMI courses: Through the USTP course selection system, EMI courses within the four universities can be enrolled by all USTP students. Moreover, one MOOC was completed and uploaded on the Ewant open education platform.

Other enhancement initiatives:

  1. An annual donation of NT$ six million from one NTPU alumnus, Mr. Tsang-Ku Chen (the Chairman of the TMI Group), facilitates international exchanges and provides scholarships for students participating in international exchange programs or overseas studies.
  2. With the alumni donation received in the 2022/23 academic year, the CoB completed in May 2023 the renovation of three EMI classrooms for EMI activities, such as teacher community gatherings, workshops, and MOOC course recording.
