Abstract
- Institutional strategy and management
- The members of the MCU EMI Resource Center Committee include the Vice President for International Affairs as the Chairman, the Executive Director of International Education and Exchange Division, the Dean and the Associate Dean of International College; all undergraduate Program Directors of International College serve as ex officio members. The Dean of Institute of General Education, and the director of Department of Applied English are invited to serve as the annual committee members. Moreover, the Director of Foreign Language Center at National Cheng Kung University (Wenli Tsou), and Honorary Professor of Department of Foreign Languages and Applied Linguistics at National Taipei University (Ching Kang Liu) are invited as external committee members.

- Teachers and teaching
- The EMI Resource Center established an EMI Teaching Team by integrating the resources of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Research and Development, the College of General Education, the Teacher Training Center, and the English Language Center to enhance teaching quality and international teaching cooperation to implement the following tasks:
- EMI workshop
- The EMI Resource Center invites domestic and international experts and scholars to conduct online, in-person, or hybrid lectures and organize seminars with a special focus on innovative teaching strategies to facilitate the sharing of teaching experiences. During the 2022-23 academic year, 6 sessions were held in total, with a combined attendance of 173 people.
- Teaching observation
- During the 2022-23 academic year, the EMI Resource Center organized a total of 20 classroom observations, with a total of 40 participants. After the classroom observations, the British Council's assessment criteria were used for course evaluation and in class observation record.
- EMI certification courses
- The course structure was planned by teachers who are members of the EMI Teaching Team, drawing on years of EMI teaching and research experience. It consists of 3 categories, with 4 major core competencies and a total of 24 courses. In the 2022-23 academic year, a total of 8 courses were offered, with a combined participation of 181 people.
- To establish a teacher certification system, we invited domestic and international experts to offer certification courses. Among them, there were 4 EMI certification courses offered in collaboration with our U.S. partner university, Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU), to ensure the teaching quality of EMI instructors in the college.
- Teachers must fulfill the EMI certification course hours, participate in course observations and seminars, attend EMI workshops, and deliver course sharing reports to be eligible for receiving the Certificate of Ming Chuan University EMI Teacher Certification.
- Teaching Modules
- During the 2022-23 academic year, a total of 6 teaching modules were developed by different academic programs and shared on the internal Moodle system. The content of each teaching module includes course outlines, course and instructional material design concepts, instructional activity design, student achievement assessment mechanisms, student guidance mechanisms, student learning feedback mechanisms, and teacher reflection mechanisms.
- EMI workshop
- The EMI Resource Center established an EMI Teaching Team by integrating the resources of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Research and Development, the College of General Education, the Teacher Training Center, and the English Language Center to enhance teaching quality and international teaching cooperation to implement the following tasks:
- Student and learning
- Conducted pre- and post-tests for English proficiency for our students. The pre-test is provided by WinHoe Company, and the post-test is provided by EnglishScore.
- Established a new curriculum framework for the International College English courses.
- Provided students with support to enhance English language proficiency.
- Local students who enrolled in the 2022-23 academic year and have an intermediate level of proficiency in English were encouraged to participate in the 'English Proficiency/Testing' course in the second semester (Spring 2023). They were offered a total of 8 online advanced TOEIC classes and 3 IELTS classes.
- Enhanced student engagement in EMI related activities
- Students with excellent English proficiency from various departments were recruited to serve as Teaching Assistants (TAs) for EMI courses. Their responsibilities included providing academic assistance in professional courses and enhancing English language skills. In total, there were 11 TAs, collectively providing at least 990 hours of service, facilitating the connection between students and courses, and encouraging student participation both inside and outside the classroom.
- Information to students and the public
- The EMI Resource Center integrates information on EMI teaching resources from both internal and external sources, and publishes it on the campus broadcasting system, the EMI Resource Center official website, and social media. This aims to provide faculty and students on- and off-campus with a better understanding of MCU’s involvement in the BEST Program.
- Quality assurance
- Through written reviews and meetings of MCU EMI committee members, the implementation of the project is ensured to align with both the university's requirements and the project's needs. The International College has established a curriculum development, approval, supervision, review, and quality assurance system. All courses undergo reviews by department, college, and university-level curriculum committees to ensure that the course planning meets industry demands, including two course review meetings.
- In the 2022-23 academic year, one comparative analysis was conducted on courses of the similar subject, comparing EMI and non-EMI courses. The report was conducted by the Information Technology and Management Program at International College, and centering on the teaching of 3D design software, analyzing student performance in EMI and non-EMI classrooms.
- Sharing and collaboration
- The EMI Resource Center integrates information on EMI teaching resources from both internal and external sources. Representatives are sent to participate in all workshops organized by the Ministry of Education, sharing information and collaborating with project leaders from other institutions.
- Other initiatives for enhancement
- The EMI Resource Center collaborates with internal resources to enhance international participation among faculty and students. To minimize the gap between theory and practice, the Center co-organized 20 EMI multi-faceted course activities, inviting industry professionals and scholars as speakers; and also hosted 2 bilingual talent recruitment fairs with industry enterprises.
