Highlights of the 2023 Academic Year
1.    Promotion of English-Taught Programs
As of 2023, NTU has established 22 English-taught programs. With BEST project support, new programs like the Bachelor’s in Intelligent Engineering & Technology and Biotechnology and Food Nutrition were launched. Additional programs, including the International Bachelor’s in Semiconductors and the School of International Politics and Economics, will start in 2024. The Civil Engineering and Economics departments now offer enough English-taught courses to meet graduation requirements, and Political Science aims for 100% English-taught courses by 2024
2.    Promotion of EMI Courses
NTU offered 1,905 EMI courses (excluding language courses), representing approximately 11.48% of the total courses. Over 20% of credits taken by second-year undergraduates and first-year master’s students were in EMI courses, with participation rates of 19.33% and 37.79%, respectively.
3.    English Courses
－English Enhancement Program: Expanded resources for low-performing students, serving 64 students in the 2023 academic year.
－EMI Preparation Program: Developed in the 2022 academic year, NTU offered six classes to 134 students in 2023, showing significant improvements in spoken English, confidence, and reduced anxiety.
－EAP/ESP/ESAP: Offered 62 classes to develop academic English skills, facilitating the transition to EMI courses.
－Eng-Lite Program: Sponsored 22 departments to organize extracurricular English activities, engaging 10,954 participants.
4.    EMI Seeded Instructor Program
Expanded to eight colleges in 2023. Seed instructors planned teaching exchanges, provided EMI-related consultations, and organized community activities, book clubs, and lesson observations to enhance EMI teaching skills.
5.    Faculty Development Initiatives
The EMI Teaching and Learning Center launched the "EMI Plus" training to address the instructional needs of EMI teaching. 
6.    Enhanced Training for EMI Teaching Assistants
Trained 307 EMI TAs in 2023 and developed specialized training programs tailored to Humanities, Sciences, and Management, set to officially launch in 2024.
7.    Additional Measures to Encourage English Learning
－English Learning Passport: Encouraged participation in EMI courses and extracurricular activities. By the end of 2023, 2,417 students held passports, with 130 receiving rewards.
－English Graduation Requirement: Motivating EMI course enrollment by allowing students to meet graduation requirements through earning EMI credits with grades of A- or above.
8.    Staff English Enhancement Programs
Offered English enhancement courses to over 100 staff members from more than 30 units, focusing on tasks such as academic affairs conversations, email and AI writing, and international affairs training.
9.    Resource Sharing and Inter-University Cooperation
In line with the University Social Responsibility (USR) initiative, we provided diverse services and shared resources to support EMI stakeholders (teachers, TAs, students) and assist higher education institutions nationwide in developing EMI capabilities. Services include faculty development, cross-university EMI growth communities, EMI-TA training, and English editing software.
