Abstract

CJCU participated in the "Program on Bilingual Education for Students in College" to elevate English proficiency across the student body. Despite most incoming students having English skills below the national average, CJCU is committed to the principle of "leaving no one behind."  It offers a flexible curriculum and robust teacher support to ensure every student can succeed.  In 2023, most KPIs were met, including "25% of freshman/sophomore English courses taught entirely in English," "5% of sophomores and first-year master's students enrolled in at least one EMI course," "50% of students in sophomore English courses able to deliver a 3-minute English presentation," and "155 faculty members have obtained EMI certification."

In 2023, approximately 30% of English courses were conducted entirely in English. The percentage of sophomores taking at least one EMI course reached 18.6%, while 12.9% of first-year master's students did the same.  Although most KPIs were met, the number of EMI courses offered was below target due to overall course reductions.

The "EMI Center" was established under the Office of Academic Affairs, staffed with a director, an administrative secretary, and a project assistant.  This center promotes EMI course offerings, promotes EMI training, and oversees performance.  A dedicated "EMI Center" website was created to share resources and activities related to EMI, including a calendar for training sessions and events. In 2023, 12 faculty members participated in EMI training offered by various institutes, and by 2024, CJCU had certified 161 EMI teachers.  Additionally, the EMI office encouraged the formation of study groups among English/EMI faculty, organizing discussions and bilingual seminars.

To prepare students for broad employment opportunities, particularly in international markets, CJCU has designed an elite program that integrates students and courses.  In 2024, the EMI Office launches the "Global Marketing Elite Development Program," which will link freshman English courses, a sophomore EMI course set, study abroad opportunities through the Office of Global Engagement, and job placement support via the Career Center in 4 years. This program aims to cultivate students into capable international marketing professionals.

Through comprehensive reforms and strategic implementation, CJCU's BEST Program is committed to promoting bilingual education across the campus, adhering to the educational philosophy of "educational equity and concern for the disadvantaged." CJCU will continue to refine its courses and support systems in a sustainable manner.
