Hungkuang University

Abstract

The BEST at Hungkuang University has at least two features: the modeling of Nursing College and the prevalence of the ESP courses.

Feature 1: Through the three key initiatives at Nursing College: modularity, bridging, and learning by using, the University has developed principles and reference examples for designing and implementing school-wide English, ESP/EAP, and EMI courses.

Feature 2: Among the 21 departments, 10 departments offer 26 professional English courses in Fall semester, and 11 departments offer 19 courses in Spring semester. By the 113 academic year, every department of the University will offer at least one ESP course for students.

The results of conducting the BEST in the 112 academic year show at least five highlights: Language Exchange and Cultural Showcase, English Café, Learning Station, Intensive English Program, and expansion of the connections.

Highlight 1: The Hungkuang Language Exchange & Culture Showcase was held for the first time in the 112 academic year, with 32 Taiwanese students and 28 international students paired to do face-to-face language exchanges for five weeks. The Culture Showcase in the following weeks attracted 594 visitors.

Highlight 2: Students with high English speaking proficiency were hired to be teaching assistants (TAs) in English Café. The other students can freely enter to chat with the TA at noon every day. A total of 572 students practiced speaking English in this way in the 112 academic year.

Highlight 3: Students who had gained TOEIC scores more than 900 points served as Learning Station TAs and offered one-on-one tutoring for students who lagged behind in learning. A total of 117 students reported to have benefited from this service.

Highlight 4: A total of 56 students participated the four-week Intensive English Program. The students made progress in their TOEIC results by more than 60 points on average. This summer program not only helped students improve their English language skills, but familiarized them with the plentiful resources of the Language Center and encouraged them to do self-learning.

Highlight 5: Intra-university cooperation has frequently occurred among administration units, in teachers’ communities, and between local and international students. Moreover, Hungkuang has built alliance with two EMI resource universities and jointly organized EMI teacher empowerment, TA trainings, and cross-university teacher communities. Internationally, the Language Center has successfully placed two international students from America and Japan in English Café for two months through the International Internship Pilot Program, in addition to the interns from Humber College, Canada.

In addition to the two features and five highlights, the implementation of the Hungkuang BEST in five aspects are reported: strengthening teachers’ resources and efficacy, improving curriculum design and implementation, improving students’ learning effectiveness and attitudes, conducting organizational integration and re-positioning, and developing school features. The challenges of implementing The BEST and the strategies to overcome the difficulties are listed for adjustment and better results in the coming academic years.
