Summary of the 2022 Academic Year Achievements for this project:
- Measures to Improve Students’ English Proficiency: In 2022, the university reformed its English curriculum, increasing mandatory English credits from 4 to 6, including EGP (4 credits) and ESP (2 credits) courses. Eleven ESP courses were piloted in the second semester of 2022, and 13 ESP courses were successfully offered in the first semester of 2023. The plan also provided diverse English learning resources, such as autonomous learning courses, online resources, bilingual writing workshops, on-campus TOEIC exams, subsidies for proficiency tests, and learning support services. In June 2023, 276 students participated in the on-campus TOEIC exams, with 59 achieving CEFR B2 level. The International Office also promotes international exchanges and interactions for faculty and students, enhancing English learning environments. To assess effectiveness, pre- and post-tests showed significant score improvements, and self-assessment questionnaires indicated slight progress in listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
- Establishing an ESP/EMI Teaching and Support System: The plan provided support measures for teachers. In 2022, incentives were provided for 11 ESP courses, 2 EMI teacher communities were formed, 10 enhancement workshops were organized, 12 teaching assistants were trained, and 3 teachers obtained EMI certification. In 2022, a partnership was established with National Taiwan Normal University’s EMI Teaching Resource Center for teaching assistant training, EMI teacher training, and sharing experiences in bilingual plan execution, supporting the university’s efforts in bilingual education.
- Quality Assurance Mechanism: The University of Taipei established a Bilingual Education Promotion Office in 2022 to execute the bilingual plan, regularly monitoring progress and effectiveness. The office, collaborating with administrative units, developed policies ensuring course offerings align with bilingual education objectives. An EMI course observation system was piloted in 2022, with plans to refine the process.
