The primary goal of the EMI Center at Tamkang University is to enhance the English teaching capabilities of our faculty and to improve the overall English proficiency of our students. This report outlines the various programs and workshops organized throughout the year for both teachers and students.

Activities for Teachers

We conducted specialized training workshops for our faculty to improve their English teaching methods. These workshops focused on integrating EMI strategies into their curriculum to ensure effective and engaging English-medium instruction.

  1. Practical English Presentation Skills Workshops in Collaboration with Studio Classroom:

In partnership with Studio Classroom, we organized workshops focused on practical English presentation skills. These workshops equipped our teachers with techniques to enhance their classroom presentations and engage students more effectively.

  1. Oxford EMI Cross-University Online Workshops:

We collaborated with Oxford EMI to host an intensive online workshop in May 2024, which provided our faculty with global perspectives on EMI and introduced innovative teaching practices from universities worldwide.

  1. Teacher Empowerment Training Courses in Collaboration with AIT:

In association with the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT), we conducted training courses aimed at empowering our teachers. These courses covered a range of topics including advanced English teaching methodologies and classroom management techniques.

  1. Professional Training for EMI Teaching Assistants:

Recognizing the crucial role of teaching assistants, we organized professional training sessions specifically designed for EMI TAs. These sessions focused on enhancing their support skills to assist teachers effectively in an EMI environment.

Activities for Students

  1. English Presentation Emergency Room:

To improve students’ presentation skills, we set up an English Presentation Emergency Room where students could receive immediate feedback and guidance on their presentation techniques.

  1. Writing Consultation Room:

We established a Writing Consultation Room to provide personalized assistance to students working on their English writing assignments. This service aimed to enhance their writing skills through one-on-one consultations.

  1. TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS Intensive Courses:

We offered intensive courses targeting all four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—to prepare students for standardized English proficiency tests like TOEFL, TOEIC, and IELTS.

  1. English Writing Competition:

To foster a competitive spirit and encourage excellence in English writing, we organized a campus-wide English writing competition. This event provided students with an opportunity to showcase their writing talents and gain recognition.

  1. Guest Lectures by Renowned English-Learning YouTuber:

We invited famous English-learning YouTuber Dena to deliver a guest lecture. The session was highly popular and inspired students by providing them with unique learning strategies and real-life language applications.

  1. Cultural Exchange Events:

In collaboration with the university’s International Office, we organized various cultural exchange events, such as movie roundtable and tea culture exchange activities. These events aimed to bridge the gap between local and international students, promoting cultural understanding and enhancing language skills through immersive experiences.

Conclusion

The activities organized by the EMI Center at Tamkang University during the academic year 112 have significantly contributed to the enhancement of English teaching and learning across the campus. We remain committed to fostering an environment where both teachers and students can thrive in an EMI setting. Moving forward, we will continue to develop innovative programs and partnerships to support our mission.
