1、The highlights for the 2023-2024 EMI Enhancement Plan:
The primary objective of this project is to advance EMI provision and foster an international environment. Specific strategies for teaching, learning, curriculum planning, quality assurance, and international cooperation will be developed. Soochow University (SU) integrates resources and offers scholarships and subsidies to enhance students' English proficiency and international competitiveness. The SU Bilingual Education Resource Center collaborates with the School of Business (SOB) Bilingual Education Promotion Office to optimize the bilingual learning environment and ensure effective EMI support for both teachers and students. The highlights of 2023-2024 EMI Enhancement Plan include:
2. Strategies for Learning Motivation
English courses are compulsory for SU freshmen. The Language Teaching Center provides a high-quality self-study environment and the Easy test as a platform for online learning. Additional offerings include self-learning groups, English enhancement courses, and proficiency test prep classes. SU also organized the "Taiwan Enterprise Global Layout" elite class with the Chih Rong Foundation and Thunderbird School of Global Management to offer our students cross-cultural communication and international leadership training.
Collaborated with SOB, the Language Teaching Center offers 13 ESP (English for Specific Purposes) courses, such as Practical Business English and Financial English Reading, for the 2023-2024 academic year. 567 SOB students enrolled in these courses. Diverse activities, including international exchanges, corporate talent cultivation, and language exchange activities, support EMI learning. From 2022 to 2024, professional EMI courses increased from 143 to 172, and enrollments rose from 4,958 to 6,336, with over 80% student satisfaction.
3. Strategies for Effective Teaching
To encourage SU teachers to offer EMI courses, SU provides various incentives and subsidies, including EMI Course Teaching Subsidy and EMI Teaching Assistant subsidy. SU also organizes various local training activities, online/in-person lectures, and workshops to improve EMI teaching skills. In the 2023-2024 academic year, SU held 15 EMI-related workshops and activities, subsidizing 25 teachers for intensive online EMI training courses.
SU is dedicated to promoting the COIL (Collaborative Online International Learning) method, connecting English courses with overseas universities online and integrating sustainable development goals (SDGs) into the curriculum, responding to globalization and future bilingual trends with a transnational teaching model. Scholars from COIL partner schools participate in the "EMI Online International Symposium" to discuss EMI and COIL teaching issues. SU continues to exchange with overseas partner universities, applying COIL teaching experiences. In the 2023-2024 academic year, SU hosted two COIL EMI-teaching lectures one EMI symposium and offered three COIL courses.
In the 2023-2024 academic year, SU offered a total of 241 EMI courses with an enrollment of 8,126 students. SOB also provides 172 EMI courses, of which 5 are online. Through various training programs, workshops, and lectures, the EMI teaching abilities of our faculty have improved. Complemented by diverse professional courses and the "EMI Course Enrollment Incentive," course satisfaction surveys for both students and teachers have shown an increase in satisfaction rates of over 3%.
