Bilingual Education Achievements Report – YZU College of Management, Social Science Benchmark Program

Since the 2024–2025 academic year (113 academic year; AY 113), the College of Management has been designated as the lead institute for the Social Sciences Benchmark Program. Positioned as the most internationalized business school within the university, the College aims to enhance domestic students’ bilingual competencies in business and management through talent-oriented and personalized education. The ultimate goal is to improve students’ international mobility and competitiveness. The following outlines the key achievements:

  1. Faculty EMI Training Support System

During AY 113, the Center continued to promote faculty professional development through a systematic approach to EMI (English as a Medium of Instruction) teaching enhancement workshops, international consultants (e.g., Fulbright advisors), and CM faculty salon, helping faculty refine teaching skills and course design. Additionally, Oxford Online English accounts and professional reference books were purchased, along with recording and photography equipment, to support faculty self-learning and diverse classroom applications. These initiatives increased faculty confidence in using English and enhanced course innovation.

  • International Professional Training:
In January–February 2025, four faculty members were selected to participate in Fulbright overseas workshops in the U.S.
Oxford Online EMI training: 16 College of Management faculty began training mid-2025 and are expected to obtain the Oxford International Certificate by mid-2026.
  • Regular On-Campus EMI Teaching Workshops:
The College hosted 2–3 on-campus EMI training workshops per semester for AY 113. Workshops were open not only to College of Management faculty but also to other colleges, extending the teaching capacity and influence of the benchmark institute.
  • Doctoral Student EMI Teaching Training:
Integrating the College’s four-year Bilingual key Project—the International Doctoral Co-Teaching Program—doctoral students participating in the co-teaching program joined full-time faculty in EMI training and in-class teaching. The College leveraged short-, medium-, and long-term faculty development plans to enhance preparation for EMI teaching.

2. Student English Proficiency Support System

To strengthen students’ language skills and learning motivation, the College implemented diversified measures under the benchmark project to support students of varying English proficiency levels:

  • TA Training Workshops:
Invited experienced English instructors to teach essential skills for EMI teaching assistants.
  • English Proficiency Enhancement:
Arranged briefings, seminars, and test preparation resources for freshmen and College of Management students. New courses on the MyET AI platform provided real-time feedback to strengthen professional English expression.
  • Issuance of International Elite Program Certificates:
For the first time, 18 graduating students were awarded certificates in AY 113, demonstrating institutionalized outcomes over four years.

3. Cross-Cultural Learning and International Perspectives

  • International Doctoral Co-Teaching Program:
A highlight project initiated in AY 110 continues to be implemented in AY 113.
  • College EMI Talk Series:
Invited doctoral students from Russia, Gambia, Poland, Vietnam, India, and Indonesia to deliver presentations entirely in English. Through interaction and discussion, students enhanced their English proficiency in a low-pressure setting and deepened cross-cultural understanding. Selected sessions were open for all students in this campus to expand the influence from the benchmark program.
  • Workplace English Lectures:
Invited senior managers from international companies to share the importance of English proficiency as a key business competitiveness factor.

4. Curriculum and Program Development

  • Business ESP Course Design:
As a benchmark bilingual college, the College collaborated with the university’s International Language & Culture Center (ILCC) to offer ESP/EAP courses, such as “Business English” and “Media English.” A freshman-level micro-credit introductory ESP course in Business English was also developed to prepare students the scaffold for EMI learning. Starting AY 114, this course will be mandatory for all first-year students.
  • EMI Business Program Design:
Designed to allow students to accumulate EMI credits within existing compulsory and elective courses and earn program certification. Implementation is planned for AY 114 to meet the new 30-30 target goals from MOE.

5.Dissemination of Bilingual Benchmarking Experience:

Since receiving the Social Sciences Benchmark Program award in 2024, the College of Management has actively expanded its signature initiatives—such as EMI TALK and the Co-teaching Program with International Doctoral Students—to benefit students across other colleges at Yuan Ze University. In March 2025, the College was invited to share its bilingual benchmarking practices with the College of Business at National Taipei University. Furthermore, in June 2025, it was invited to the Bilingual Benchmarking School Collaboration Conference at National Taiwan Normal University to exchange bilingual education experiences with NTNU’s Office of Academic Affairs and other benchmark schools/colleges.
