Highlights of the 2024 Academic Year

Through comprehensive strategies in teaching, learning, environment building, and collaboration, NTU has strengthened its bilingual capacity, supported both faculty and students, and contributed to shaping a more internationalized higher education landscape in Taiwan.

1. Promoting EMI Programs

NTU now hosts 25 English-medium teaching units, including 46 departments/programs, with several new full-English bachelor programs in engineering, agriculture, international semiconductors, and the social sciences. In 2024/25, NTU offered 2,079 EMI courses (12.35% of total), with nearly one-quarter of students taking over 20% of their credits in EMI.

2. Enhancing Students’  English Proficiency

To meet diverse needs, NTU provided tailored programs:

• English Enhancement Program: for lower-proficiency students (54 participants).
• EMI Preparation Program (EMIPP): 8 classes, 431 students, with significant gains in speaking proficiency and confidence.
• EAP/ESP/ESAP Courses: 121 English courses to support discipline-specific EMI learning.
• Eng-lite Program: 8,011 student participations in English workshops/events.
• One-on-One Consultations: 885 sessions with NTU-trained tutors and Fulbright Fellows.

3. Faculty Development and EMI Seeded Instructors

8 colleges nominated EMI seeded instructors to lead workshops, peer observations, and peer support groups. The EMI Teaching Resource Center organized EMI Plus workshops, lectures, and exchanges to support teachers from entry-level to advanced EMI practice.

4. EMI Teaching Assistants (EMI TAs)

726 TAs were trained in 2024/25, with domain-specific preparation in humanities, STEM, management, and the new biomedical module. Training emphasized classroom facilitation and collaborative teaching.

5. Staff’s English Capacity Building

We offered intermediate speaking, upper-intermediate writing, and short-term workshops, with 100+ staff and student ambassadors from 30+ units participating. Three pilot beginner workshops were conducted to boost administrative efficiency and international reception skills.

6. Bilingual Campus Environment

A total of 13 colleges and 38 units upgraded their websites, signs, facilities, regulations, and communication platforms to meet the bilingual standards.. NTU also introduced a “Bilingual-Friendly Campus Guideline” to ensure sustainable bilingual infrastructure.

7. Students’ Motivation and International Engagement

The English Learning Passport attracted 4,316 users, while 51 students fulfilled the English graduation requirement via EMI course achievements. Employer engagement offering 666 students internship placements at global companies.

8. Inter-University Collaboration

Guided by the University Social Responsibility, NTU shared EMI resources with peer institutions through teacher communities, TA training, editing tools, and mobile EMI workshops, fostering a sustainable, nationwide EMI ecosystem.
