National Chung Hsing University (NCHU) has adopted English as a Medium of Instruction (EMI) and has gradually developed a comprehensive implementation framework that emphasizes teaching quality, student learning support, and quality assurance mechanisms.
1. Faculty Development in EMI
As of Academic Year 2024 (AY 113), a total of 364 faculty members have completed 36 hours of EMI professional development training. Among the development-focused colleges, the proportion of instructors who have completed EMI professional development training has reached 80% in the College of Engineering, 72% in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, and 67% in the College of Life Sciences. In addition, the university has established institutional support measures for EMI faculty development. These include onboarding training for new faculty members and teaching incentives, which aim to enhance instructors’ motivation, confidence, and competence in English-medium instruction.
2. Student Learning Support and Curriculum Alignment
To support students’ transition into EMI courses, the university has restructured its freshman English curriculum into English for General Academic Purposes (EGAP) courses and developed discipline-specific English for Specific Academic Purposes (ESAP) courses, including Engineering English, Biotechnology English, and Agricultural English. This curriculum design establishes a coherent and progressive learning pathway that builds students’ academic English competence across listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also strengthening their ability to use discipline-specific terminology. It further aims to reduce language-related anxiety in EMI learning contexts and to enhance students’ academic performance in their respective disciplines.
3. EMI Learning Resources and Digital Support Systems
Colleges have developed digital learning materials and resource-sharing platforms to support EMI learning. Specifically, the College of Science has produced remedial EMI instructional videos for foundational courses such as Calculus, General Physics, and General Chemistry. The College of Life Sciences has also established a bilingual EMI learning website and mobile application to support students’ self-directed learning and after-class review. These resources are made openly accessible, strengthening student learning support and reducing academic stress within the university. They also extend high-quality learning materials to faculty and students in related fields beyond the university, reflecting the institution’s commitment to educational equity and the broader dissemination of bilingual education resources.
4. Quality Assurance and Teaching Enhancement
In addition, NCHU has implemented a peer-supported teaching model consisting of lesson planning, classroom observation, and post-observation reflection, facilitating professional exchange among instructors. Comparative analyses of teaching effectiveness in Chinese- and English-medium instruction are conducted to ensure that EMI implementation maintains both disciplinary rigor and student learning quality, thereby supporting ongoing enhancement of teaching and learning effectiveness. The College of Engineering has developed a large-scale EMI course evaluation survey, collecting 1,830 responses in 2024. Advisory committee meetings are also held regularly, with domestic and international experts invited to conduct classroom observations and provide evaluation feedback.
