Abstract

Aligned with MOE policy and mid-term goals, NKUHT advances on two pillars—becoming a bilingual university and expanding global mobility—through a top-down system led by the President and the EMI Office. Phase II (2023) began with the International and Tourism Colleges, and in 2024, extended to Hospitality and Culinary Arts.

NKUHT’s QS Hospitality & Leisure Management ranking reached #38 in 2023–2024 and #45 in 2025, #5 in Asia, showing growing recognition. The vision is to evolve into a world-class bilingual university in hospitality and tourism.

EMI policies standardized incentives and QA: EMI faculty training, three-level course approval, reduced evaluation pressure for first-time EMI instructors, peer observation, and IR refinement. Faculty development highlighted authentic assessment, EMI–EAP integration, and Gen-AI pedagogy. A five-day certificate training with Boston University and expert consultations built a cycle of design, observation, and diagnostic feedback.

EMI course offerings increased by 16% year-on-year. In the Tourism College’s bilingual Principles of Management showed English- and Chinese-track students achieved comparable results, confirming the effectiveness of structured support. To address varied student proficiency, NKUHT adopted small classes, tutoring, English Day, EMI contests, and B2 bootcamps. In 2024, KPIs were exceeded: all-English EGP/ESP 43.6% (target 27%), 65.9% of freshmen/masters took ≥1 EMI course (target 48%), and 63% of freshmen improved in post-tests. Outbound mobility rose 15.7%, MOE Study Abroad grants ranked #1 nationwide, MOVE Asia engaged 58 students, and the PATA NKUHT Student Chapter was launched.

IR research results showed no overall gap between Mandarin- and English-taught courses, though subject/college differences informed adjustments. The International College introduced an EMI QA Form to link feedback with redesign.

Bilingual websites and social media strengthened branding. Faculty exchanges with Humber College and Hotelschool The Hague, plus internships with Marriott, Nikko, and Four Points, expanded opportunities. International student numbers also increased. Next, NKUHT will expand digital EMI modules, target support for early cohorts and non-key colleges, and deepen industry–international pipelines toward a top-tier global bilingual university in hospitality and tourism education.
