Abstract

NKUST’s bilingual initiative is closely aligned with the University’s “WISH Mission” and “BEST Southbound” strategies, fostering a student-centered bilingual campus and strengthening students’ global competitiveness. Significant progress was achieved in AY113.

In faculty and curriculum development, 262 faculty members have obtained EMI training certificates, with 48% of trained faculty actively delivering EMI courses. Teaching quality was further enhanced through Grammarly writing support, EMI teaching assistant subsidies, and professional development programs. The University offered a total of 481 English-taught courses, including 341 EMI courses. Among all colleges, the College of Management demonstrated particularly strong performance, offering 102 EMI courses, representing nearly 30% of all EMI courses across the University. The College also achieved an EMI course ratio of 11.5% of its total course offerings, substantially exceeding its original target and demonstrating its leadership in curriculum internationalization and bilingual education development.

To support student learning, NKUST established a comprehensive English learning pathway through placement-based instruction and 275 EAP/ESP bridging courses. The University also expanded international learning opportunities, with 247 students participating in the Overseas Wings Program and benefiting from a global network of 461 partner universities.

In quality assurance, EMI courses achieved an average student satisfaction score of 4.6, exceeding the university-wide average. Institutional data further indicated that students enrolled in EMI courses demonstrated stronger academic performance and higher pass rates than those in comparable Chinese-medium courses. In addition, the College of Management integrated the AACSB Assurance of Learning (AoL) framework into its EMI curriculum, ensuring continuous improvement and alignment with international standards.

Beyond curriculum development, the College of Management actively fosters an English-friendly and internationally oriented learning environment. Throughout the project period, the College organized at least one English and intercultural learning activity each month, including English Corners, English career talks, and international exchange events. These activities provided students with valuable opportunities to practice English beyond the classroom while enhancing their intercultural communication skills and global awareness. To further strengthen students’ international mobility, the College also offered a variety of non-credit English proficiency preparation courses, providing additional learning resources to help students improve their language skills and obtain the English certifications required for student exchange programs, overseas internships, and further studies abroad.

To promote transparency and resource sharing, NKUST disseminated bilingual education initiatives through the “NKUST Steps Up” Podcast and the EMI Teaching Think Tank. Supported by a strong top-down governance structure and comprehensive support mechanisms, the bilingual initiative has successfully enhanced students’ international mobility, English proficiency, and readiness for the global workforce.
