Wenzao EMI Training Courses

The first MOE regional “Resource Center for Bilingual Education” was officially inaugurated in September 27, 2021 in National Sun Yat-sen University. The 2-year project “Southern Regional Universities and Colleges of Technology in Higher Education EMI and Taiwan Huayu Best Program” (南區高教EMI區域資源中心計畫及優華語資源中心計畫) has been implemented cooperatively by Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages and National Sun Yat-sen University to offer teacher training courses to more than 5,000 teachers from 14 public and private universities including 7 vocational and technological colleges or universities in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung.

Wenzao Ursuline University of Languages is the only higher education institute of languages in Taiwan. Specializing in foreign language education, Wenzao has persisted in using English as a medium for English education and dedicated herself to creating an effective English immersion learning environment. With good reputation and her experienced English teaching faculty, Wenzao has joined this project by offering good quality courses aimed at fostering more English language teaching professionals in higher education to meet the policy of developing Taiwan into a bilingual nation by 2030. The target trainees are teachers from 6 vocational and technological colleges and universities in Kaohsiung and Pingtung. Wenzao holds EMI instructors meetings regularly to discuss and share teaching contents and feedback from trainees. Moreover, the experienced EMI instructors are encouraged to participate in different EMI workshops at different universities and institutes to bring back the latest information of EMI to share with the team of Wenzao EMI instructors through training workshops.

I. The objectives of Wenzao EMI training courses are to help teachers

  1. use English as a teaching medium.

  2. be familiar with the methods, the skills, the teaching tools in English language

teaching.

  3. know how to motivate students to participate in an English learning environment

with achievements.

  4. raise teachers’ teaching capacity to teach foreign students.

II. The features of Wenzao EMI training courses

   1. Interactive lectures, discussions and demonstrations are offered in a small class.

   2. Feedbacks and suggestions are provided after each Teaching Demo.

   3. The opportunities of teaching observations and cooperation are provided.

   4. A certificate written in bilingual is given by Wenzao after full attendance.

III. Target Trainees and Courses:

   1. Full-time or part-time teachers who are interested in acquiring EMI skills from

vocational and technological colleges or universities in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, or southern regions.

   2. Courses:

     (1) Module 1: EMI Introduction Course

     (2) Module 2: EMI Advanced Course (Trainees need to have Module 1 certificate first before registering Module 2 course.)

VI. Wenzao EMI instructors

The team of Wenzao EMI instructors consists of interdepartmental professors from Wenzao. They specialize in TESOL, Second Language Acquisition, Teaching Children Literacy, Curriculum and Material Design in Language Teaching, etc. They have had experience and expertise in using English as an instruction medium in real-classroom teaching. In addition, they have been awarded various certificates, such as Elementary School Teacher Certificate, Cambridge EMI Certificate, Cambridge TKT Modules 1-3 Band 4 Certificate, etc.

VII. Information for registering Wenzao EMI training courses

    2. The maximum number of trainees per class is 5.

A class less than 3 trainees will be cancelled.

    3. Registration Fee:

       (1) The course is fully subsidized by the Ministry of Education. Trainees are

required to pay a deposit of $3000 NTD, and it will be refunded after full

participation.

       (2) The deposit should be paid within 2 days after receiving the remittance

virtual account. If the payment cannot be made, it will be regarded as a

waiver, and re-registration is required to participate.

IX. Outcome of Wenzao EMI courses

   88 sessions ( 65 sessions of Module 1 and 23 sessions of Module 2) have been

opened and to date, a total of 453 trainees have participated from October 23^rd, 2021. The table below indicates the colleges or universities that Wenzao has been cooperating with:

66.90% of the total number of trainees are from the six Southern Regional Universities and Colleges of Technology Wenzao has been aiming at.
