Features of National Central University's Bilingual Program

  1. On December 6, 2021, the 762nd Executive Council approved the establishment of the university-level “Bilingual Teaching Resource Centre” to provide administrative support and bilingual teaching-related resources for all faculties and departments of the university.
  2. The implementation of the Bilingual Digital Learning Buddy Program will help build a bilingual digital curriculum and develop bilingual digital teachers to achieve the goal of cultivating bilingual digital talents.
  3. On June 15, 2022, the school's academic affairs meeting approved the revision of freshman foreign language courses and teaching implementation rules. From the 111 academic year, freshmen must provide four English proficiency scores in listening, reading, speaking, and writing before they can apply for exemption from freshman English courses.
  4. Initiate English reform measures for freshmen to include four major areas of science, engineering, management, and humanities and social sciences into the professional English (ESP) curriculum and add evening practice classes to strengthen speaking and writing skills of freshman students.
  5. Promote students' English self-study program, expand existing English self-study-related businesses and resources, and organize series of English-learning activities, competitions, and lectures in combination with the freshman English ESP course to cultivate students' English ability in taking EMI professional courses.
  6. Create a diversified self-learning space - iHouse Xiangxiang space is based on the concept of students’ independent learning space. Equipped with a seat management system, it provides a reservation-based independent seating area and discussion room to promote the use this space for language exchange by local and foreign students.

 

Overview of the highlights of National Central University School of Management Bilingual program

  1. Institutional strategy and management
    The "International Master of Business Administration (IMBA)" program was established. A total of 14 new students were recruited in the first batch, including 11 local students and 3 foreign students. They will enroll in September 2022.
     
  2. Teachers and teaching
    Establish EMI teacher support system and incentive mechanism. On February 22, 2021, the School of Management Committee approved the incentive method for teachers at the School of Management, National Central University to teach EMI courses. Through the "National Central University School of Management Full English Course Teaching Assistant Subsidy Points", the EMI teachers of our school can also apply for teaching assistants every year to assist in course management, class observation, and evaluation in addition to receiving incentives.
     
  3. Students and Learning
    The school adopts a dual-track system of English test speaking and writing rewards and course completion rewards, to encourage first-year students to use the EnglishScore APP issued by the British Council to conduct self-tests of English proficiency after admission, and then choose the English test certification exam that meets their own needs based on the evaluation results. Before entering the sophomore year, the course reward promotional videos will be used to encourage sophomores to take EMI courses and reduce their anxiety about course selection. 
     
  4. Information Disclosure
    It is expected that the construction of the EMI website of CUHK will be completed in September 2022, which aims to let students understand the implementation and promotion purpose of the bilingual program from the perspective of students as users. In order to meet students' habits of using social media tools, the "CUHK School EMI Bilingual Learning Program Facebook Fan Page", "CUHK School EMI Bilingual Learning Program Official LINE", the English examination and course community of students of CUHK Management School and the EMI-TA community have also been created.
     
  5. Quality Assurance
    In line with the first and second semester course evaluation periods of the school, the EMI teaching assistant will assist in sending the online course evaluation questionnaire to the students of the EMI course to fill out and in carrying out course evaluation twice a year. Through this questionnaire, students can assess their level of learning and use of English proficiency in the classroom in English-taught courses and provide feedback and ideas on EMI course teaching. Plus, they can collaborate with the Career Development Centre of the Office of Academic Affairs. The current job description for the English demand level will be included in the annual graduate/alumni questionnaire to serve as an important reference for the implementation and promotion of EMI course teaching in the future, in addition to the original EMI course, to help English proficiency and expression ability.
     
  6. Resource sharing and inter-school cooperation
    Record our EMI teachers twice a year, for a total of six courses, and share it on our Facebook page or the EMI website.
     
  7. Other packages
    In September 2022, the students of the School independently established the "FEM Crazy English Management Club". The activities of the club activities include English film appreciation in the field of business management, theme-based English exchange seminars, exchange of seniors, and sharing of experience in studying abroad to cultivate students' independent and free learning space.
