Abstract

  • Institutional strategy and management
    • The members of the MCU EMI Resource Center Committee inlcude the Vice President for International Affairs as the Chairman, the Executive Director of International Education and Exchange Division, the Dean of International College, the Association Dean of International College, and all Directors of each respective undergraduate programs as the Ex Officio Members of the committee. The Dean of Institute of General Education and Department of Applied English are invited to serve as the annual committee member. The main tasks of the committee are as below:
      • Map out the development focus and characteristics of The BEST Program 
      • Provide consultation on relevant laws and regulations regarding The BEST Program
      • Review all applications and financial subsidy for the BEST Program
      • Be responsible for regularly tracking, reviewing, and evaluating the execution effectiveness
      • To resolve other matters related to the BEST Program

 

  • In 2021, the following regulations were enacted:

  • Teachers and teaching
    • The EMI Resource Center established the EMI Teaching Team by integrating the resources of the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of Research and Development, the College of General Education, the Teacher Training Center, and the English Teaching Center to enhance teaching quality and international teaching cooperation to implement the following tasks:
      • EMI workshop
        • The EMI Resource Center invites domestic and international experts and scholars to conduct online, in-person, or blended lectures and held seminars with a special focus on innovative teaching methods to facilitate the sharing of teaching experiences.
      • Teaching observation
        • During the 2022/23 academic year, the EMI Resource Center organized a total of 20 classroom observations, with a total of 40 participants. After the classroom observations, the British Council's assessment criteria were used for course evaluation and in class observation record. 
      • EMI certification course
        • The curriculum structure of the certification courses is designed by the EMI Teaching Team, consisting of teachers having experience in EMI teaching and research for several years. There are 24 courses in total, classified into 3 categories and 4 core competencies. Each academic year, 8 courses are offered, covering the core competencies of teacher professional development, classroom management and student guidance, bilingual education curriculum planning and design, and teaching strategies and methods. Teachers can choose and accumulate a minimum of 9 courses from at least 3 categories based on their individual needs to meet their goals of enhancing teaching abilities.
      • Teaching Module
        • During the 2022/23 academic year, a total of 6 teaching modules were developed by different academic programs and shared on the internal Moodle system. The content of each teaching module includes course outlines, course and instructional material design concepts, instructional activity design, student achievement assessment mechanisms, student guidance mechanisms, student learning feedback mechanisms, and teacher reflection mechanisms.
      • EMI Teacher Certification System
        • The domestic and international experts are invited to offer the EMI Teacher Certification courses. The overseas EMI Teacher certification is currently is currently implemented by the Saginaw Valley State University, a MCU’s partner’s university to ensure the teaching quality of the EMI teachers.
        • Teachers must fulfill the requirements of EMI certification, which include completing the required number of EMI certification courses, participating in course observations and seminars, attending EMI teacher workshops, and delivering course sharing reports, in order to obtain the Ming Chuan University EMI Teacher Certification Certificate.
  • Students and learning
    • The EMI Resource Center integrates the resources from the Office of Academic Affairs, the Office of General Education, the Office of International Student Affairs, the Teacher Training Center, the College of Education and Applied Languages, the Department of Applied English, and the English Teaching Center to decrease the gap among students with different levels of English language proficiency and furthermore to establish a school-level Student English Proficiency Enhancement Team, with the following main tasks:
      • Implement a before and after test on English Proficiency for International College students.
      • Establish a new English Curriculum Framework for International College
        • As our students come from different English language backgrounds, their general and academic English language skills vary over a wide range. IC will implement a new English curriculum framework from the fall semester of the 2022-23 academic year to ensure students with lower level of English proficiency to participate in courses taught in English successfully, and students with higher level of English proficiency to take classes in advanced settings.
      • Provide students the supports to enhance English proficiency
        • The local students in the intermediate level of the 2022/23 academic year are encouraged to participate in the "English Proficiency/Testing" course in the second semester of the 2022/23 academic year. We provide online advanced TOEIC/IELTS courses for students.
      • Enhancing Student Engagement in EMI related activities
        • For each EMI course, students with better English proficiency and professional learning effectiveness are also selected to serve as Tas. Having students act as TAs can enhance their participations in and out of the classroom.

 

 

  • Information to students and the public
    • To increase the understanding of students, faculties and teachers toward the MCU EMI teaching resource center, we aim to strengthen the IC website, establish school-wide EMI learning area and specially set up living, learning, career areas.

 

  • Quality assurance 
    • Through the reviews and meetings of MCU EMI committee members, the implementation of the project is ensured to meet the requirements of the school and the project itself. The International College has a curriculum development, approval, supervision, review, and quality assurance system. All courses undergo reviews by department, college, and university-level curriculum committees to confirm that the course planning meets industry demands

 

  • Sharing and Collaboration
    • The EMI Resource Center integrates both internal and external EMI teaching resources and select the representatives to participate in workshops organized by the Ministry of Education and share information with project leaders from other institutions for collaboration. Additionally, it collaborates with the Long-term Alliance Program and allied schools to facilitate the exchange of information and resources.

 

  • Other initiatives for enhancement
    • The EMI Teaching Resources Center, in collaboration with internal resources, enhances the international participation of students and teachers and co-organizes diverse curriculum activities. Inviting industry experts and scholars as speakers helps to reduce the gap between learning and application.
