Abstract

The on-campus English proficiency test was modified to test students for all-around English capability of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In the meantime, Professional Vocabulary Quotient Credential (PVQC) is introduced to offer an assessment on English for Specific Purposes (ESP) 。

  1. The teaching materials of English courses as well as the grading and classification systems on English proficiency for university department are adjusted.
  2. Promoting students’ learning motivation:
    1. Students with excellent English proficiency or foreign students are encouraged to serve as teaching assistants on related courses with a reward for including in the record of learning resume of student. 
    2. English Presentation Contest was hosted in Dec. 6, 2022. Moreover, on-campus PVQC contest was held in Oct. 26, 2022. The winning students were enrolled to attend the district contest held in Nov. 19, 2022 and national contest expected to take place in 2023. 
    3. Two echelons for New TOIEC training course were opened in academic year 2022, resulting in totally 32 students passing on-campus graduation threshold for English.
  3. A course called “Remedial course of ESP” is newly opened in master’s program to train graduate students on reading and writing skills for English thesis. 
  4. A certification of learning resume of English proficiency will be issued to the undergraduate students in day school passing the graduate threshold on all the major on-campus English proficiency test.
  5. Creating a learning environment for foreign language is achieved by constantly opening the learning park for foreign language every semester and offering a series of foreign language courses available for students to take.
  6. EMI tutor system is practiced by hiring professional teachers of English or foreign teachers to assist EMI teaching.
  7. A training workshop for PVQC teacher was held in academic year 2022, resulting in totally 18 teachers qualified for a certificate.
  8. Each of the nine classrooms in English Teaching Center is newly equipped with a recording system of distant learning for teacher to use.
  9. An online platform called “Learning and Test Platform of English for English for Specific Purposes” developed by English Teaching Center integrates online various teaching resources such as professional vocabulary, grammar for sentence pattern, reading, translation, writing, etc. to offer test, teaching, and self-learning for the teaching center, teachers, and students respectively. 
  10.  Constructing Bilingual Education Support System:
    1. To establish Bilingual Education Resources Center and set up Bilingual Teaching Course Promotion Committee to determine the implementation points of bilingual teaching course, which is the regulation for course subsidy and course effectiveness evaluation review.
    2. To coordinate with units at all levels within the school to revise related regulations, conduct tracking and assessment of bilingual teaching effectiveness, and report to the Institutional Research as the reference for further rolling review.
  11.  Enhancing the Bilingual Teaching Ability of Teachers:
    1. To implement the bilingual teaching mentor system and hire professional guest lecturers or foreign teachers to assist in bilingual teaching.
    2. To encourage teachers to participate in education and training related to bilingual teaching, and to become bilingual teaching seed teachers. This will include providing demonstrations of bilingual teaching, the production of bilingual teaching materials, and the development of language skills training.
    3. To organize Cambridge and Oxford English-medium instruction (EMI) training online courses, provide language skills training for teachers, and assist them in familiarizing themselves with English-language teaching methods and practical examples.
  12. Expanding Bilingual Course Teaching Support:
    1. To establish distance learning and video recording classrooms, and to develop language simulation tests and online course materials. Through distance learning mode, cooperation and exchange can be carried out with international sister schools for teaching purposes.
    2. To promote the bilingual teaching demonstration departments, gradually expand from the popularization of English compulsory courses to the bilingualization of professional courses of the department, and progressively guide students to achieve the goal of improving bilingual speaking ability.
